Advantages of Microgravity Environments

Have you ever wondered what new insights might find if gravity were removed from your research?

On Earth, gravity pulls matter downward, causing convection and sedimentation due to density differences. These gravitational forces can influence the structure and function of materials and cells, sometimes masking the phenomena essential to your study.

The unique environment of microgravity, where gravitational effects are minimized, enables us to obtain data and samples with shapes, purity, and precision that are difficult to achieve on Earth.

Four Key Characteristics
Convection-Free Crystal Growth

In microgravity, the absence of convection and sedimentation allows a stable concentration gradient during crystal growth. This environment enables the production of large, high-quality single crystals that are difficult to obtain on Earth.

Alterations in Cellular Function

The removal of gravitational mechanical stress leads to significant changes in cell morphology and function.Observed responses include alterations in proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and metabolic activity.

Accelerating Cancer and Aging Research

Microgravity and radiation can accelerate cellular aging and cancer progression. This environment has the potential to enable faster disease modeling and shorter timelines for drug evaluation.

Containerless Material Processing

Microgravity enables materials to be processed without contact with containers. This allows researchers to obtain highly pure thermophysical property data and develop advanced crystalline materials.

How to Access Microgravity

There are two main frameworks for utilizing the ISS Japanese Experiment Module “Kibo”: a public call program and a fee-based utilization program. For business and R&D projects that require confidentiality, the fee-based utilization program—where a private operator serves as the point of contact—is widely used.

Space BD leverages this framework to provide end-to-end support, from initial concept development to sample return.

STEP1: Onboarding
1. Consultation

We provide guidance on project feasibility and the most suitable implementation approach.

2. Application

We prepare the required application documents, including a project overview, and submit them to JAXA for evaluation.

3. Mission Coordination

We coordinate with JAXA to define technical feasibility, schedule, and cost.

4. Contract & Payment

We conclude the contract based on agreed terms and initiate the project.

STEP2: Preparation for "Kibo"

We manage and support the complex procedures and testing required for ISS utilization.

5. Safety Review

We conduct safety verification in accordance with JAXA requirements for ISS payloads, from test planning to execution.

6. Operational Planning

We prepare astronaut procedures in compliance with spaceflight operational standards.

7. Logistics & Launch Site Operations

We handle the entire logistics process, including export/import documentation, transportation arrangements, and final preparation at the launch site.

8. Launch

Your equipment and samples are transported to the ISS aboard a cargo spacecraft.

STEP3: Mission Operations & Recovery
9. On-Orbit Operations

Experiments conducted by astronauts are monitored from the ground. Our team provides coordination and support when needed.

10. Sample Recovery & Return

Once returned to Earth, samples are recovered and delivered directly to your facility.
